The John Edward Plank farm was south of Fairfield Road and west of the Emmitsburg Road. Nearly 150 acres of it have now been acquired by the American Battlefield Trust for preservation. John and his wife Sarah were parents to a dozen children who were raise on the farm. At the time of the battle, three of the children had been born and were all under the age of four.
The farm was a major Confederate field hospital and treated approximately 1,500 men, including the wounded General John Bell Hood. At least sixty known burials happened on the farm.
